Camp Tonkawa Summer Camp Book Troop Sign Up Form Class Schedule INTRODUCTION TO CAMP TONKAWA Camp Tonkawa is nestled under huge Oak trees in southern Taylor County, Texas. Located about 12 miles south‑southwest of Abilene and about 4 miles west of Buffalo Gap, the camp is on FM89 next to the Abilene State Park. Camp Tonkawa is a camp where the Spirit of Scouting is still strong. Songs, campfires, fellowship, and outdoor adventures make it an excellent Scouting adventure for Scouts of all ages. Camp Tonkawa offers an outstanding merit badge program designed to offer quality teaching while helping the scout achieve his Scouting goals. Merit badge classes are offered during 3 morning and 3 afternoon sessions.
* = Out of Council Current as of 01/30/2006 Handicrafts Handicraft Merit Badges are offered at Beaver Lodge throughout the day. Indian Lore, Leather, Basketry, Woodcarving and Art are among the merit badges offered. Camp Tonkawa has one of the finest Handicraft Directors in Scouting, Mr. Melvin Cagle. Adults are always welcome to work on a personal project at their convenience. Aquatics The Aquatics Area has not only a 160,000 gallon pool with shower house, but a lakefront area. Canoeing, Rowing, Sailing, Mile Swim, Lifesaving, Swimming and BSA Lifeguard are among the offerings in the Aquatics Area. Campcraft The Campcraft Area is the Scouting Skills development center of Camp Tonkawa. Hiking, Orienteering, Wilderness Survival, Pioneering, Emergency Preparedness, and Communications are among the many skills taught in the Campcraft Area. Shooting Sports The Shooting Sports Area boasts three ranges, and offers a variety of shooting experiences through the Archery, Shotgun Shooting, and Rifle Shooting (including the Muzzleloading option) merit badges. Nature/Ecology/Conservation (NATECO) NATECO is an area that features the wild animals and beautiful surroundings of Camp Tonkawa. Environmental Science, Fish and Wildlife Management, Mammals, Weather and Astronomy are offered at NATECO. Tonkawa Braves This program is the pride of Tonkawa. It is designed for new Scouts and those coming to Camp Tonkawa for the first time to work on their Tenderfoot through First Class requirements. The program is designed as a "hands on" experience for the Scouts. Project Cope Project COPE (Challenging Outdoor Personal Experience) is an advanced camper program that offers a set of stimulating activities designed to meet the needs of today's young people who are seeking greater challenges to their physical and mental abilities. This is a half day program that allows Scouts to also earn their BSA Lifeguard. Cycling New in 2000, this program teaches the basics of cycling and most of the requirements of the Cycling merit badge, and features a challenging off-road bike trail through a variety of terrain features. Climbing New for 2002, a 35-foot climbing and rappeling tower allows Camp Tonkawa to offer a half-day, afternoon program where Scouts can learn about Climbing and Rappelling, hone their ropes skills, and fulfill the Climbing requirements.
