He became a Boy Scout in Clyde at age 12 and has been involved in Scouting most of his life. In Sweetwater he has served over a period of eighteen years, as an Explorer Advisor, Assistant Scoutmaster, and Scouting Coordinator. He completed Timber Tag, Wood Badge Training and is a member of the Order of the Arrow. He served as District Chairman of the Northern District for two years and as Nolan County S.M.E. Chairman.

He has been on the Council Executive Board since 1976 and a Council Vice President for the past two years. He has been a member of the Super Scout Show committee, Council nominating committee, and the 1977 Jamboree committee.

As a member of the First United Methodist Church of Sweetwater, he has served as chairman of the Administrative Board, Sunday school superintendent, and chairman of the Finance Committee. As a member of the Downtown Lions Club he served as Club President and had 22 years of perfect attendance. He went on to become zone chairman and later District Governor of Lions International. He is presently chairman of the Nolan County Red Cross.

Ben is principal of East Ridge Elementary School. His son, Gary, is an Eagle Scout and is in his second year at Texas A & M University.
