JAMES NORMAN RUDING BRYAN
Norman, as we all know him, was born in England in 1935. After his father was sent to Africa in the mid 1940’s to serve in the military, he moved to Orange, California and lived with his grandfather. Upon returning to England after his father’s return, he attended the Harrow School. He later moved to Miami, Florida where he graduated from the University of Miami in 1961.
In 1956 Norman served in the British Amy in the Armored Corp as a tank crewman. In 1957 he joined Florida Power and Light Company and worked with them until 1974. In 1983 he started as Director for Information Service for West Texas Utilities.
Norman entered the Scouting program in 1972 in the South Florida Council as Cubmaster of Pack 491. He later became an Assistant Webelos Leader and then served as Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 941 for 7 years. In 1985 he joined Pack 206 at Bowie Elementary School in the Chisholm Trail Council as a Webelos Leader. In 1986 he became a number of the Southern District Committee of the Chisholm Trail Council as a Unit Commissioner. In 1987 he became Assistant District Commissioner and in 1988 he became District Chairman of the Southern District. In 1989 he was elected as Vice President of Membership and Relationships of the Chisholm Trail Council and served in that capacity until he was elected Vice President of Finance for 1993.
He has served on the training staffs for Cub Scout Basic, Timber Tag, and the College of Commissioner Science. He attended Wood Badge SC-360 and is the recipient of the Cub Scouters Training Award, the Scouters Training Award, the Arrowhead Honor Award and the District Award of Merit.
He has served as a Loaned Executive for the United Way and in 1987-1988 he served as cochairman for the West Texas Utilities Employee United Way Campaign. From 1987 until 1992 he served as an Advisory Board Member for Computer Technology at the Sweetwater campus of the Texas State Technical College. In 1991 he became a member of the Public Responsibility Committee of the Abilene Regional Mental Health Mental Retardation and in 1992 he became a Board member of the Texas Alliance for the Mentally Ill.
Norman’s service to Scouting spans 20 years where he has assisted in the development of the character of the youth in two different Councils. His basic philosophy has been to provide the best training possible so that the volunteer leaders can deliver an effective program that will benefit the participants. Even with his dedication to Scouting and his employer, he has always found time to be with his family. He and his wife Sylvia have three children - James, an Eagle Scout and a Captain in the USAF; two daughters Patricia and Jeannette; and a granddaughter, Christina who is the "apple of grandpa’s eye."
