SAMUEL C. FERGUSON

Sammy, as he is more commonly known, has given his adult life to the betterment of the youth in Hamlin. He has devoted over 20 years to Boy Scouting. That’s a remarkable accomplishment considering he has two girls. He has been a teacher and administrator in the Hamlin Independent School District for seventeen years. Because of Scouting and his chosen career, he has been a role model to many youth over the years.

Sammy received his Arrow of Light award and then went on to earn his Eagle Scout award in 1964. He attended the National Jamboree in 1964 and also Canoe Base in Canada. He started his adult Scouting in the mid 70’s. Over the years he has served on several committees in the District and Council, especially those that centered around outdoor activities such as camporees. In 1977 he was awarded his Vigil in the Order of the Arrow and the Scouter’s Training Award. In 1978 he completed Woodbadge and earned his Scouter’s Key in 1980. In 1983 he was awarded the District Award of Merit for his service to the Northern District. To compound his service to Scouting, he took over as Scoutmaster in Troop 143 in 1973. In 1981 he stepped down to a committee member and took the responsibility as the Unit Commissioner for Pack and Troop 143 which he is still doing today. In the Fall of 1990, Sammy agreed to became a Webelos leader in Pack 143.

The community of Hamlin has benefited from Sammy’s hard work and dedication also. He has been active in youth programs such as Children’s Church at First Baptist, where he has been a life-long member. He has served on the Hospital Board and has been an active leader in the Rotary Club.

Sammy truly exemplifies what Scouting is all about. He has always given of himself to help others.
