WALLAR H. OVERTON
He was born and raised in Haskell County and is a 1961 graduate of Texas A & M. As a Scout he earned the Arrow of Light and the Eagle rank. He received his God and Country Award, was selected as a Vigil member of the Order of the Arrow and was elected as a Chapter Chief for Kotso Lodge. He hiked the trails of Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico and went to two National Jamborees, first at Irvine Ranch, California as the Quartermaster and then to Valley Forge, Pennsylvania as the Senior Patrol Leader.
He served as a Border Officer on the East/West German Border from 1961 to 1963 with the 2nd Squadron, 14th Armored Calvary in Bad Kissingen, Germany. He married Steffi Ziegler in 1974 and they are the proud parents of Hans and Marcus. The Overton family is noted for their involvement in Scouting. His mother, Mabel, is a recipient of the Silver Fawn and his father, Gene, received the Silver Beaver as a member of the Executive Board and was also Scoutmaster. Wallar’s twin, William, and brother Mike are Eagle Scouts and Vigil members of the Order of the Arrow.
Scouting as an adult has been an active one. He attended the 1964 National Jamboree as an Assistant Scoutmaster. Two years later he was the Crew Leader for a Canadian Canoe Trip. He presently is the Northern District Camping Committee Chairman and served as the as the 1989 Northern District Camporee Chairman. He is a past member of the Chisholm Trail Council Executive Board. He has received the Scouter’s Key as Scoutmaster and is working his Woodbadge Ticket from SC-360. He has served eleven years as Scoutmaster and four years as a Timber Tag Staff member. His troop, Troop 148, has won four Presidential Ribbons in the past 5 camporees.
Wallar’s involvement in youth programs covers many years of service to the community of Paint Creek. He presently is serving the Paint Creek Independent School District as the President of the Board of Trustees. He is active in the Paint Creek Methodist Church as the Sunday School Superintendent and does work with the Administrative Council, Finance Committee and Pastor Parish Committee. He was selected as the Haskell County Conservation Rancher of the Year for 1988 and now serves as the Generalissimo of Haskell Commandery No. 49 of which he is Past Commander.
Other community involvement includes serving on the ASCS Community Committee, Past President of the Paint Creek Water Supply, Past President of Farmers Co-op Gin of Haskell, Past Texas A & M Muster Chairman and Past Master Masonic Lodge 682-AF & AM Haskell. It is with great pleasure that the Chisholm Trail Council presents the Silver Beaver to Wallar H. Overton.
