HENRY H. MCGINTY

Henry was born in 1919 and grew up in Eastern Connecticut. He joined the Boy Scouts at age 14 and received his Eagle award in 1937. He finished co11ege in Vermont and became a professional Scouter in 1942.

His first assignment with the Boy Scouts of America was in Boston, Massachusetts. From there he was transferred to Roswell, New Mexico and in 1953, he came to the Chisholm Trail Council as Scout Executive. During his tenure, the Chisholm Trail Counci1 purchased and developed the property we call Camp Tonkawa. He retired from the Boy Scouts of America in 1969 but he never quit working with youth and the betterment of Abilene. Since his retirement he has remained active in Scouting as a Committee Member and Scouting Coordinator for Troop 206 chartered to the Kiwanis Club of Abilene. He has also served on the White Buffalo District Committee as a member of the District Advancement Committee and the Advisory Board of the Chisholm Trail Council.

Henry’s involvement in civic affairs in the Abilene community and the Big Country is extensive. He has been active in Kiwanis for over 42 years and has served in various positions. He has served on the Boards of the YMCA, West Texas Fair Association, Eye Care for the Elderly, the AARP and Ben Richey Boys Ranch. He has been active with Mend-a-Child, the West Texas Genealogy Society and has served as Chairmen of the Weatherization Program for the Elderly since 1989. He has also been active at St. Paul United Methodist Church where he has served as a Board member, Sunday School Superintendent, and Chairman of the Building Committee. He is presently serving as Vice President of the Abilene Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution which provides scholarships for qualified Eagle Scouts.

Henry and Helen have two daughters, Ruth and Happy, and five grandchildren one of which is a Boy Scout. His service to Scouting spans almost 60 years. He has touched the lives of many, many Scouts and Scouters. It has been said that "he was, he is, and will always be Mr. Scouting" to the Chisholm Trail Council.
