Aivars “Ivan” Jurkis was born and raised in Neenah, Wisconsin. During his youth, he was involved in several activities but none more important to him that being a member of the Boy’s Brigade. After graduating High School, he entered the United States Air Force. In 1996 he graduated from the Community College of the Air Force with an Associate Degree. After twenty-four years of service, he retired while stationed at Dyess Air Force Base.

Scouting has been a big part of Aivars’ life while stationed at Dyess AFB. In 1985 he joined Pack 296 and served as a Pack Committee member and eventually as Cubmaster until 1993. He also served as Cubmaster of Pack 212 at Regan Elementary School from 1994 – 1996. While he was busy in Cub Scouts, he was also preparing for Boy Scouts. In 1987 he joined Troop 296 as a Committee member and remained active with them until 1995. In 1991 he joined Troop 217 at Pioneer Drive Baptist Church and became Scoutmaster where he is still serving. Because of his sincere interest in meeting boy’s needs, he has been active on the District and Council level also. He has served on numerous Timber Tag and Wood Badge courses as a staff member.

Because of his dedication to the Scouting program, his peers have recognized him. In 1993 he was awarded the District Award of Merit and Kotso Lodge, Order of the Arrow, bestowed the Vigil Honor and Founders Award on him. The National Eagle Scout Association awarded him the Scoutmaster Award of Merit in 1995. Under his leadership 11 boys have been recognized with the Eagle Scout Award.

Aivars is a member of the American Legion, the Air Force Sergeants Association, and the National Rifle Association. He is also a licensed Texas Irrigator, and a Certified Microsoft Professional.

Aivars and Darline have three children – two boys, Sean and Aaron, who are both Eagle Scouts and a daughter, Alyssa, who is active in Girl Scouts. As a volunteer and leader in the Scouting program, he has always put the needs of the boys above all others, regardless of circumstances. He is a leader that exhibits the Scouting aura by following the Scout Oath and Law in his daily life.
